Searching for information in India has just received a major upgrade. Google has officially launched its advanced “AI Mode” for Search, moving beyond simple keyword queries. This new feature, first seen in the United States, is designed to understand and answer long, complex questions in a single go, offering users a more intuitive way to find precisely what they need, from detailed trip itineraries to thorough product comparisons.
A More Intelligent Search
The engine behind this enhanced search experience is a customized version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model. This technology utilizes a “query fan-out technique,” a smart method that deconstructs a user’s detailed question into several smaller, related searches.
It then scours the web for information on these sub-topics simultaneously, piecing together a comprehensive answer from multiple sources. This allows people to ask questions that are two or three times longer than a typical search query.
For instance, a parent could ask, “Suggest creative ways to get my energetic 4 and 7-year-old kids active indoors on hot days without much space or expensive toys.” The system can deliver a tailored list of suggestions and even handle follow-up questions, such as requesting activities the children can do on their own. Early feedback from users has been favorable, with many praising the speed and high quality of the answers.

Beyond Typed Words
A key element of AI Mode is its ability to accept multimodal inputs, a feature especially useful in India where Google Lens sees high engagement. Users are no longer limited to typing; they can now speak their questions or use an image to initiate a search. This flexibility makes finding information more convenient, particularly for lengthy queries while on the go, by simply tapping the microphone icon.
This integration with Lens creates new practical uses. If you’re gifted a plant and have no idea how to care for it, you can now open the Google app, snap a photo, and ask, “What’s this plant and give me instructions on how to repot and take care of it?” This blend of visual and spoken queries delivers a more contextual and effortless search, providing detailed guides directly to the user.
How to Try the New Feature
This powerful search tool is currently available as an experiment. To try AI Mode in India, users must opt-in through Google’s Search Labs. The feature is accessible in English within the Google app on both Android and iOS devices.
To activate it, tap your profile picture in the top-right corner, go to “Search Labs,” and enable the experiment named “AI Mode.” Google has indicated that it will continue to improve the tool based on user feedback, though a date for a wider, full-scale launch has not been announced.
