Amazon Q2 2025 strong AWS revenue beats rivals, fuels AI investments

Amazon recently unveiled its second-quarter 2025 financial performance, showcasing robust expansion. Increased sales and profits highlight strong market demand, with its cloud computing division playing a crucial role within a competitive technology landscape.

Amazon’s Q2 2025 financial results revealed net sales hit $167.7 billion, a 13% jump year-on-year, with net income rising to $18.2 billion from $13.5 billion. Amazon Web Services (AWS) proved crucial, its revenue growing 17.5% to $30.9 billion, slightly above expectations. AWS contributed $10.2 billion to Amazon’s $19.2 billion operating income, achieving an annualized revenue run rate of $123 billion.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy described AWS as a rapidly expanding, multi-billion-dollar business with demand currently outstripping supply. He highlighted new AI tools such as Kiro, an agentic IDE for developers, Strands for building AI agents, and Bedrock AgentCore for secure, scalable operations. Alexa+ has also expanded to millions of customers.

Amazon reported $31.4 billion in Q2 2025 cash capital expenditures, primarily for AWS. CFO Brian T. Olsavsky stated this high investment will likely continue through the second half, addressing rising AI service demand.

Spending focuses on custom silicon like Tranium, chips, data centers, and power infrastructure, pursuing this “unusually large opportunity” in generative AI.

Competitors posted strong cloud results, signaling an active market. Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud revenue for Q4 2025 rose 26% to $29.9 billion, with Azure and other cloud services growing 39%. CEO Satya Nadella noted cloud and AI drive business transformation across sectors; Azure’s annual revenue surpassed $75 billion, up 34%.

Google Cloud’s Q2 2025 revenue reached $13.6 billion, a 32% increase. CEO Sundar Pichai offered context, noting that in 2015, all of Alphabet’s revenue totaled $75 billion. He highlighted YouTube and Cloud combined closed 2024 with an annual run rate of $110 billion, showcasing their substantial contribution.
